Age-Related Effects on Memory in the Context of

Age-Related Effects on Cognition

Adult age differences in measures of episodic memory are well established, and in many variables there is a difference of approximately 1.5 standard deviation units between age 20 and age 70. However, comparable age differences are evident in other types of cognitive variables, and thus the question can be raised as to the degree to which the age-related influences on different memory or cognitive variables are unique to those variables, or are shared with other variables. Because the answer to this question has important implications for the nature of explanations of age-related effects in memory and other cognitive abilities, this talk will discuss evidence relevant to the distinction between unique and shared age-related influences.
